Medical Specialist – Cardiothoracic Surgery

A leading academic paediatric hospital is seeking to appoint a Medical Specialist in Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery to join its multidisciplinary cardiac team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a specialist who is passionate about providing advanced surgical care to neonates, infants, and children while contributing to teaching, research, and the continued development of a world-class paediatric cardiothoracic service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialised paediatric cardiothoracic surgical services to neonates, infants, and children.
  • Manage congenital and acquired cardiothoracic conditions requiring surgical intervention.
  • Participate in elective and emergency operating lists, multidisciplinary team meetings, and post-operative ICU management.
  • Provide inpatient care within paediatric ICU, cardiac wards, and step-down units.
  • Participate in the departmental on-call roster.
  • Teach and supervise registrars, medical officers, fellows, and undergraduate medical students.
  • Contribute to research, clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and departmental governance.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (National Senior Certificate).
  • MBChB or equivalent qualification.
  • Current registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Completed recognised specialist training in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Less than 5 years” post-specialist experience.
  • Experience in paediatric cardiothoracic surgery or an interest in sub-specialising will be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated experience with neonatal and infant operative caseloads will be advantageous.
